Chen Tuan was a renowned Taoist priest in the early Northern Song Dynasty, with numerous works to his name.
Only this text survives in the Daoist Canon (The Daozang) today, included in the Jade Instructions Category of the Dongzhen Section.
Annotated Elixir Song of Yin Zhenjun
The Returning Elixir Ode is a work falsely attributed to Yin Changsheng, a Taoist priest of the Sui and Tang dynasties, expounding the way of refining the Golden Elixir. Chen Tuan’s annotations quote the Huangting Jing (Scripture of the Yellow Court) to explain alchemical principles, covering external alchemy and Yin elixir, but focusing primarily on Internal Alchemy. Its alchemical methods are not entirely consistent with those of the later Northern and Southern branches of The Quanzhen Dao, involving dual cultivation.
