Awakening to Truth Scripture of Inner Alchemy 悟真篇

Composed by Zhang Boduan during the Song Dynasty.

The book was completed in the eighth year of the Xining reign of Emperor Shenzong of Song (1075 CE).

Numerous annotated versions have survived, among which Annotations and Commentaries on the Wu Zhen Pian by the True Person Ziyang (included in the The Dongzhen Section of the Taoist Canon (The Daozang)) and Correct Meaning of the Wu Zhen Pian (included in the seventh collection of Essential Records of the Taoist Canon) are the most elaborate and detailed.

Awakening to Truth

This work expounds the theories and methods of Internal Alchemy (Neidan) through poems and odes, asserting that cultivating Internal Alchemy is the primary path to immortality. According to Zhang’s own preface, the book is divided into two parts: the main compilation and the appendix. The main compilation contains ninety-three poems and songs, discussing the "art of nurturing life and consolidating form"—i.e., the "life cultivation" (minggong) of Internal Alchemy. Its method regards the human body as the cauldron and tripod, and the three treasures of essence, Qi (Vital Energy), and spirit within the body as the supreme medicines. Through refining essence into Qi, and Qi into spirit, one forms the Golden Elixir.

The appendix collects thirty-two poems, odes, and miscellaneous verses, borrowing the Buddhist Chan concept of "enlightening the mind and perceiving nature" to elaborate on the "path of attaining the root and clarifying nature"—i.e., the "nature cultivation" (xinggong) of Internal Alchemy. It holds that through cultivating the mind and nature, one can achieve emptiness, tranquility, and non-action, return to the root and revert to the origin, and unite with the Dao. Thus, the alchemical method described in this book is characterized by the dual cultivation of life and nature, prioritizing life cultivation before nature cultivation.

After the Northern Song Dynasty, the Internal Alchemy theories and cultivation methods of the Southern School of the Golden Elixir Sect were greatly influenced by this work. Taoist priests of successive dynasties have revered it as a classic text of Internal Alchemy.
