Originally attributed to "Xia Zongyu, a Recluse of Yunfeng from Yongjia"—Xia Zongyu is namely Xia Yuanding of the Song Dynasty.
Consisting of seven scrolls, it is included in the Jade Commentaries Category of the The Dongzhen Section within the Taoist Canon (The Daozang).
Lecture Notes on Inner Alchemy of Ziyang
A preface by Zhen Dexiu, dated the third year of the Baoqing reign (1227 CE), is included at the beginning of the compilation. It states that Xia’s Lectures on the Wu Zhen Pian "analyzes each chapter and sentence in detail, making readers suddenly free of doubts after reading". The entire work interprets each of the ninety-three poems and songs in the main compilation of the Wu Zhen Pian one by one, excluding the Chan Sect poems, odes, and miscellaneous verses appended to the original book.
Following Zhang Boduan’s tenet of "the unity of the three teachings" (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism), the annotations cite alchemical texts to elaborate on the essence of Internal Alchemy (Neidan) cultivation. The alchemical method described belongs to the Pure Cultivation school of the Southern School, emphasizing self-cultivation. The writing is clear and fluent.
