Composed by Taoist Priest Sima Chengzhen during the The Tang Dynasty, this text was originally part of his Treatise on the Essential Meaning of Qi Cultivation—specifically the last seven of the work’s nine chapters.
In the surviving version of The Daozang, it is separated as an independent book and included in the Various Techniques Category of the The Dongzhen Section.

The seven chapters, along with their content, are as follows:
- Treatise on Daoyin (Guided Movement): Explains methods of qi circulation combined with guided physical movements.
- Treatise on Taking Medicines: Details the use of herbal remedies to harmonize the zang-fu organs and nourish bodily fluids.
- Treatise on Talisman Water: Describes techniques of swallowing talismans and reciting mantras to cure illnesses and replenish Qi.
- Treatise on Caution and Taboos: Discusses health-preserving taboos, emphasizing that one’s diet, daily life, and habits should align with the cycles of Yin and Yang and qi movement.
- Treatise on the Five Zang Organs: Outlines ways to unblock meridians, harmonize the zang-fu organs, and preserve essence and qi.
- Treatise on Qi Cultivation for Healing: Elaborates on qigong techniques for treating diseases.
- Treatise on Disease Symptoms: Introduces methods of diagnosing internal illnesses based on symptoms related to spirit, vitality, and facial complexion.
Most chapters first draw on medical texts such as the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic) to discuss health preservation principles, then elaborate in detail on techniques for nurturing life and curing diseases.
