Cao Songyuan was a native of Yixing (now part of Jiangsu Province) during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.
He became a monk at an early age in Yuanfu Wanning Palace on Mount Juqu, where he performed rituals to worship the Three Mao Lords and inherited the Shangqing Taoist school.

Later, he went to Mount Wudang and Kaiyuan Temple in Hangzhou to seek Taoism and like-minded companions, practicing esoteric principles together. He passed away after achieving enlightenment in Taoism.
