The Essence of the Scripture of the Original Deeds of the Supreme Jade Emperor
The author is unknown. It was probably compiled during the Yuan Dynasty.
It consists of one scroll and is included in the Benwenlei (Scripture Text Category) of the Dongzhenbu (True Grotto Section) in the Daozang (Taoist Canon).
This text is an abridged version that extracts the essential tenets of The Scripture of the Original Deeds of the Supreme Jade Emperor. It omits the stories about the Jade Emperor’s cultivation and attainment of Buddhahood, as well as the grand incantations of the Jade Emperor from the original scripture. Instead, it retains the content of the Jade Emperor’s incarnations expounding the way of purity and liberation, along with the merits of mortals reciting the scripture.
At the end of the text, there is an attached “Origin of Scripture Transmission”, which states that in the 4th year of the Zhizheng reign period (1344), Liu Chuyuan obtained this scripture on the road in Piling. From this, we can conclude that this text was likely produced during the Yuan Dynasty.
