The Dayou 大宥

Dayou (? - 1285) was a native of Yingshan, Suizhou (now part of Hubei Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. His Taoist title was Dongyunzi, and he came from a family of government officials.

In his youth, he went to Wudang Mountain to become a Taoist monk. For over forty years, he wore clothes made of grass and lived on a vegetarian diet, yet his devotion to Taoism only grew stronger.

Later, he traveled north across the Yinshan Mountains to search for the historical sites of the Quanzhen School of Taoism.

In the 12th year of the Zhiyuan era (1275), he returned. Together with Wang Zhenchang and others, he restored the temple complexes of Wulong (Five Dragons) and Zixiao (Purple Clouds) on Wudang Mountain.

Famous for his Taoist deeds, he initiated more than a hundred disciples into Taoism. Later, he lived alone in a thatched hut he built at Nanyan (Southern Cliff) on Wudang Mountain.

In the 21st year of the Zhiyuan era (1284), he imparted the essential principles of Taoism to Zhang Shouqing.

He passed away in the first month of the 22nd year of the Zhiyuan era (1285).
