The True Grotto: The Supreme Scripture of the Golden Scroll, Tiger Talisman, and True Text
As one of the early classic texts of the Shangqing School (Supreme Clarity School), it was likely compiled during the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties (317–589 CE).
Excerpts from this text have already been cited in The Essential Secrets of the Supreme (Wushang Miyao).
The present version is included in the Zhengyi Bu (Orthodox Unity Section) of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).
The "Golden Scroll and Tiger Talisman" in the title refers to the "True Talisman of the Golden Tiger" and "True Talisman of the Divine Tiger"—two important talismans of the early Shangqing School. In the Zhengyi Bu of the Daozang, there are two separate texts: The True Grotto: The True Talisman of the Golden Tiger from the Supreme Mystery and The True Grotto: The Divine Tiger Jade Scripture of the Supreme.
This text is a compilation of selected content from the above two texts, mainly describing the origin, functions, and the transmission rituals (including covenant protocols) of these two talismans.
In Volume 9 of The Seven Slips of the Clouds’ Satchel (Yunji Qiqian), there is a chapter titled "Explanation of the Supreme Golden Scroll and Tiger Talisman," which excerpts content from this text.
