The Dongzhen Jade Clarity Hidden Script Scripture
As one of the early classics of the Shangqing School (Higher Clarity School) of Taoism, it was roughly compiled during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
Volume 47 of The Essential Secrets of the Supreme (Wushang Miyao) cites the "Four Scrolls and Eight Formulas of the Dongzhen Jade Clarity Hidden Script"; Catalogue of the Shangqing Great Cavern True Scripture (Shangqing Dadong Zhenjing Mu) records the "Four Scrolls of the Shangqing Highest Subduing Demons Cavern Vision Golden Mystery Jade Clarity Hidden Script"—which refers to this very scripture.
The original text consisted of four scrolls and eight chapters, and was included in the "Zhengyi" (Orthodox Unity) section of the Daozang (Taoist Canon). However, in the Daozang version, it was divided into four separate scriptures, namely:
- The Shangqing Supreme Jade Clarity Hidden Script Subduing Demons Divine Wisdom High Mystery True Scripture (1 scroll, 3 chapters);
- The Shangqing Highest Subduing Demon Kings Imperial Divine Wisdom Jade Clarity Hidden Script (1 scroll, 3 chapters);
- The Shangqing Highest Subduing Demons Cavern Vision Golden Origin Jade Clarity Hidden Script Scripture (1 scroll);
- The Shangqing Highest Golden Origin Feathered Chapter Jade Clarity Hidden Script Scripture (1 scroll).
According to the citations in The Essential Secrets of the Supreme and Taoist reference books of the Sui and Tang dynasties, the above-mentioned four scrolls (with eight chapters in total) were originally a single book, collectively known as the "Jade Clarity Hidden Script Scripture".
