The Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries of Golden Essence from the True Grotto, Attributed to the Supreme Dao Lord, the Highest Sage of Shangqing (Shàngqīng Gāoshèng Tàishàng Dàdàojūn Dòngzhēn Jīnyuán Bājǐng Yùlù), abbreviated as The Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries of Golden Essence from the True Grotto (Dòngzhēn Jīnyuán Bājǐng Yùlù).

As one of the early core classics of the Shangqing School, it is believed to have been compiled during the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties.

It was already recorded in The Ritual Norms and Precepts for Cultivating the Dao in the Three Grottoes (Sāndòng Fèngdào Kējiè Yífàn) and quoted in The Supreme Secret Essentials (Wúshàng Mìyào). The original text consisted of one scroll, but the version in the present-day Daoist Canon (Dàozàng) was mistakenly divided into two separate Taoist texts:

  • One, titled The Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries of Golden Essence from the True Grotto (Dòngzhēn Jīnyuán Bājǐng Yùlù), is included in the Jí (Collection) section of the Zhengyi Grotto (Zhèngyī Bù).
  • The other, titled The Hidden Talismans and Morning Diagrams of the Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries from the True Grotto (Dòngzhēn Bājǐng Yùlù Chéntú Yǐnfú), is included in the Guǎng (Expansion) section of the Zhengyi Grotto.

The first text (The Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries of Golden Essence from the True Grotto) constitutes the first half of the original work, mainly narrating the birth, cultivation of the Dao, and reception of the Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries by the Supreme Dao Lord.

It states that the Supreme Dao Lord originally existed as "the essence of the two mornings, the purple mist of the auspicious clouds." Later, he embodied himself in the womb of a mortal mother, took human form, and was named Qìxiāng (Vessel of Fragrance) with the courtesy name Shàngkāi (Upper Awakening). The Dao Lord received the register from the Purple Emperor, held the position of a supreme immortal, and was titled "The Highest Sage Jade Morning Supreme Dao Lord of Shangqing."

Subsequently, he ascended to the Nine Heavens and received nine talisman diagrams, including The Hidden Talisman of the Great Morning of Nine Radiances (Jiǔhuī Dàchén Yǐnfú), The Hidden Talisman of Observing the Spiritual Primordial Morning (Guānlíng Yuánchén Yǐnfú), and The Hidden Talisman of the Nine Poles of the Universal Morning (Zǒngchén Jiǔjí Yǐnfú), collectively known as the "Jade Register of the Eight Sceneries."

The narrative of this text ends here, and the aforementioned nine talismans are not included.
