The Dongzhen Taishang Sanyuan Liuzhu Jing 洞真太上三元流珠经

Paul Peng
Dongzhen Supreme Three Yuans and Flowing Pearl Scripture (Dongzhen Taishang Sanyuan Liuzhu Jing), one of the early classics of the Shangqing School, was probably compiled during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.

Volume 47 of The Supreme Secret Essentials (Wushang Miyao) already records that this scripture had "four essences and eight scrolls".

The existing version in the Daozang (Taoist Canon) only has one remaining scroll, which is included in the Zhengyi Bu (Orthodox Oneness Section).

The first half of the scripture states: There is a deity in the Liuzhu Palace (one of the nine palaces in the human brain), named "Upper Taiyi Lord" (Shang Taiyi Jun). This deity is specifically in charge of inspecting people’s merits and demerits. Those who perform merits and have no demerits can have their lifespan extended (yisuan yannian).

The text here is only the beginning and does not complete its meaning, as the original text is severely incomplete. The second half is titled The Oral Instructions of Realized Person Feng of Shangqing (Shangqing Zhenren Feng Xiansheng Koujue), which discusses methods for Tao practitioners to maintain their health, nurture their vitality (qi) and nourish their spirit (shen), so as to harmonize their soul (hun) and ethereal soul (po).

The content of this second half is suspected to be interpolated by later generations.
