The True Text of the Nine Heavens and Eight Collections from the Taiwei Yellow Book of Dongzhen

Also known as The Mysterious Capital Girdle Text, it is an early classic of the Shangqing School, probably compiled during the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties.

Originally, it was the eighth chapter of the eight-volume Taiwei Yellow Book of Dongzhen, and later separated into an independent volume.

The Standards of Precepts for Upholding the Dao in the Three Caverns records it as "The Eight Seal True Text of the Taiwei Yellow Book in Shangqing", which refers to this very scripture. It is included in the "Methods Category" of the "Dongzhen Section" in the Taoist Canon.

The Supreme Secret Essentials also quotes excerpts from this scripture. The scripture states that in the past, the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu) bestowed this scripture to Lord Wang of Xicheng, who then passed it on to Xu Yuanyou (Xu Mai, a Taoist priest of the Eastern Jin Dynasty).

It contains 200 characters of true text in seal script, as well as 200 characters of the "Girdle Text" (i.e., the explanatory text of the seal-script true text).

It is claimed that if a Taoist practitioner can recite this Girdle Text consistently, ferocious beasts and evil spirits will not dare to invade; if they wear it on their left elbow, they can travel through six states, control the world, subdue countless soldiers, meet the Imperial Lord of the Golden Palace, and command ghosts and gods.

This is the Shangqing School's technique of reciting incantations and wearing talismans to ward off evil and achieve subduing power.
