The Gao Shang Tai Xiao Langshu Qiongwen Dizhang Jing

The Supreme Great Heaven Jade Book: Jade Emperor’s Literary Scripture (Gaoshang Taixiao Langshu Qiongwen Di Zhang Jing) is one of the early classics of the Shangqing School, presumably dating back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420 CE).

The Catalogue of the Shangqing Great Grottoes True Scripture (Shangqing Dadong Zhenjing Mu) records the entry "One Scroll of the Shangqing Great Heaven Jade Book: Jade Emperor’s Literary Scripture"—this refers to the present text.

The surviving version today is included in the "Original Texts" category of the Dongzhen (True Grotto) Section of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).

Wushang Miyao (The Supreme Secret Essentials) also extensively quotes from this scripture.

The scripture falsely claims to have been transmitted by the Void Sovereign Lord of the Dao (Xuhuang Daojun) to Yunwuzi, who then passed it down to eighteen figures including the Taihua True Person, Chisongzi, and Wang Qiao.

The text first lists the names, territories, and official duties of the celestial officials of the Nine Heavens, as well as the surnames, taboos, attire, and administrative residences of the Nine Heavenly Kings. Next, it records nine chapters of The Great Heaven Jade Book: Jade Texts, all of which are five-character rhymed verses. Then, it includes "Two Hundred and Forty Sounds of the Jade Emperor’s Literary Scripture"—i.e., two hundred and forty true texts written in seal script.

It is claimed that "the Great Heaven Jade Book is the soaring melody of the Nine Heavenly Kings, and the Jade Emperor’s Literary Scripture is the profound illuminating way of the high spirits"; "both are the primordial essence of the Nine Heavens and the hidden names of all true beings."

Practitioners who contemplate the spirits, focus on the "True Essence" (zhen), wear the talismans, and recite the scripture in accordance with the prescribed method will, after nine years of practice, ascend to become immortals and "take on the same form as the true beings."
