He Hechun lived in the late Qing Dynasty. He was unrestrained in temperament, extraordinary in ambition and capacity, and made remarkable contributions to reviving Taoism and restoring dilapidated temples.

During the Xianfeng reign, coinciding with the Taiping Rebellion, all Taoist monasteries and altar courtyards in Wuchang were reduced to ashes, and Taoist monks scattered in all directions. In the third year of the Tongzhi reign (1864), Hechun came from Wudang Mountain and vowed to restore and expand the temples.

Through arduous efforts and with the support of the Governor-General of Hubei, as well as financial assistance from Provincial Military Commander Li Shizhong, he finally transformed the temples into magnificent structures.
