Li Deyuan, a native of Jintai in the early Ming Dynasty, went by the art name Guyan. He became a Taoist priest at Chongyang Wanshou Palace in Shaanxi Province when he was young, and was well-versed in Tao Te Ching, Zhuangzi (also known as Nan Hua Jing), as well as the scriptures of the three religions (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism).
As recorded in Records of Wudang Mountain: In his prime, Deyuan traveled around and arrived at Zixiao Palace on Wudang Mountain. He then showed respect to the virtuous scholar Zeng Renzhi as his teacher, who imparted to him the profound Thunder Magic.

From this, Li Deyuan understood the principles of the "innate nature" and grasped the origin of "substance and function" (a core concept in traditional Chinese philosophy). Later, he moved to Yuanhe Temple.

In the 23rd year of the Hongwu era (1390), the Prince of Xiang visited Wudang Mountain. He praised Li Deyuan for his achievements in cultivation and granted him residence at Changchun Temple in Jingzhou Prefecture. Li Deyuan lived to be over 80 years old before passing away.
