The Lu Xun 卢循

The Lu Xun 卢循

Paul Peng

Lu Xun

A native of Fanyang Commandery (a historical region covering parts of modern Hebei and Beijing) during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, with the courtesy names Yuxian and Yuanlong. His family had long adhered to the Wudoumi Dao (Way of the Five Pecks of Rice), a major early Taoist school.
He was the brother-in-law of Sun En (a key Taoist rebel of the era). When Sun En launched his uprising, Lu Xun collaborated with him in plotting the rebellion. After Sun En’s defeat, the remaining rebels acclaimed Lu Xun as their leader. He captured Guangzhou (a strategic city in southern China, roughly corresponding to modern Guangzhou, Guangdong Province), took charge of local administrative affairs on his own initiative, and styled himself "General of the Southern Pacification."
He sent envoys to present tribute to the Eastern Jin imperial court, which in turn appointed him to the positions of "General of Conquering Barbarians," "Governor of Guangzhou," and "General of the Peaceful Yue (a term for southern ethnic groups) and Commander of the Central Army."
During the Yixi era (405–418) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Lu Xun launched a northern expedition. He was defeated by Liu Yu (a powerful general who later founded the Liu Song Dynasty), and subsequently threw himself into the water and died.
