The Ninefold Perfected Precepts FULL NAME IS

The Wonderful Scripture of the Nine True Wondrous Precepts of the Supreme Lord, the Golden Register for Salvation of Lifespan and Deliverance from Sins of the Nine Netherworlds

The compiler is unknown. Judging from its textual content and phrasing, this scripture was composed by Taoist priests in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and is incorporated into the section of Precepts and Commandments under The Dongzhen Section of The Daozang.

An additional Tang-dynasty manuscript copy of this text was also discovered in Dunhuang (Document No. S957). The scripture proclaims that the Primordial Heavenly Venerable expounded the Dao and its teachings to all the great sages in the Wondrous Realm of the Nine Purities; and at the request of the Northern Emperor of Fengdu, he transmitted the Golden Register and White Slip of the Nine True Wondrous Precepts, along with the True Talisman for Rescuing the Afflicted and the Spiritual Talisman for Longevity and Sovereignty, so as to widely deliver the sinful souls suffering in the underworld.

The Nine True Wondrous Precepts consist of nine articles in total, exhorting people to be loyal to the sovereign, show filial piety to parents, compassionately save all living beings, refrain from lechery and theft, and uphold all such virtuous conduct.

It is said that mortals who can receive and uphold these wondrous precepts, as well as wear and venerate the spiritual talismans with sincere faith, shall be able to expiate the great sins of the Nine Netherworlds and have their names inscribed in the Nine Palaces.
