The author is unknown.

It was probably compiled during the Yuan Dynasty or the early Ming Dynasty.
Consisting of one scroll, it is included in the Weiyi (Rituals and Etiquette) category of The Dongzhen Section in the Daoist Canon.

As one of the Taoist lamp rituals, this text is used for praying for the absolution of sins and longevity by lighting lamps to worship the Beidou Seven Primordial Stars (the Big Dipper).

The Beidou Seven Primordial Stars are:

  • True Imperial Lord of the Greedy Wolf Yang Star, Great Sage of Sh 枢 Palace;
  • True Imperial Lord of the Giant Gate Yin Essence Star, Great Sage of Xuan Palace;
  • True Imperial Lord of the Lu Cun True Person Star, Great Sage of Ji Palace;
  • True Imperial Lord of the Wen Qu Dark Mysterious Star, Great Sage of Quan Palace;
  • True Imperial Lord of the Lian Zhen Cinnabar Origin Star, Great Sage of Hengyang Palace;
  • True Imperial Lord of the Wu Qu North Pole Star, Great Sage of Kaiyang Palace;
  • True Imperial Lord of the Po Jun Heavenly Pass Star, Great Sage of Yaoguang Palace.
