During my years of studying Daoist classics at Longhu Mountain, I have devoted considerable attention to the profound teachings of Quanzhen Taoism. The concept of original mind is Dao represents one of the most sophisticated philosophical achievements in late Daoist history.
The Core Meaning of Original Mind is Dao
The phrase "original mind is Dao" (本心即道) is a fundamental proposition in late Quanzhen Taoism. It asks a simple but deep question: what is the true nature of our mind, and how does it connect to the Dao that flows through everything?
The classic text Xuan Jiao Gong An (玄教大公案) puts it this way: "Mind is Dao, and Dao is mind — stop looking elsewhere." The point is clear: the original mind and the Dao aren't two separate things. They're the same reality seen from different angles.
The Zhong He Ji (中和集) expands on this: "When you look at Dao with the mind, Dao is the mind. When you look at mind with Dao, mind is Dao." Here, "mind" means the original mind — that pure, uncluttered awareness at the center of each person.
What does this mean in practice? We don't need to search for Dao in some distant heaven. Look inward, find your original mind, and you've found the Dao.

The Taiji symbol represents the unity of opposites — exactly like the original mind is Dao teaching. This consecrated pendant, crafted from authentic lightning-struck jujube wood, helps you embody that unity in daily life. When you wear it, you carry the essence of mind-Dao unity with you.
"Since wearing this Taiji pendant, I feel more centered and balanced. The concept of original mind is Dao makes so much more sense now. Beautiful craftsmanship."
The Philosophical Foundation: Mind and Dao as One
The original mind is Dao doctrine has its own philosophical framework. It draws from Neo-Confucianism and Chan Buddhism but goes its own way.
Look at it from the angle of the original mind, and Dao appears as that very mind. Look from the angle of Dao, and the original mind shows itself as the embodiment of Dao. This back-and-forth is the doctrine's unique contribution to Chinese philosophy.
The late Quanzhen masters used this to describe spiritual realization without requiring people to leave the world or abandon moral responsibility. A Daoist practitioner can recognize the sacred depth within ordinary mind — no world-renunciation needed.

The Five Wealth Gods represent the five blessings of ancient Daoist tradition — similar to how the 'original mind is Dao' doctrine reveals the path to spiritual abundance. This consecrated amulet brings comprehensive blessings for practitioners on the Daoist path.
"This Five Wealth Gods amulet has brought unexpected prosperity to my life. The craftsmanship is excellent and the consecration feels authentic."
Original Mind is Dao in Internal Alchemy Practice
In Daoist Internal Alchemy (Neidan, 内丹), original mind is Dao matters for the cultivation of xing gong — the "nature work" or spiritual transformation.
The practitioner starts by steadying the mind in its original, unconditioned state. From there, the whole alchemy of spiritual transformation unfolds. The quality of one's original mind shapes everything that follows.
The great Quanzhen masters knew that mental purity isn't just a first step — it's the highest attainment itself. When the original mind reaches complete stillness and clarity, the practitioner naturally aligns with the Dao.
In this way, original mind is Dao is both the starting point and the goal. The practitioner doesn't get Dao from outside. They recognize Dao was always there, in the original mind.
The Three Treasures (Sanbao, 三宝) of Jing, Qi, and Shen find their unified expression through cultivating this original mind.
Practical Application in Daily Life
Understanding original mind is Dao isn't just intellectual entertainment. It actually helps with daily spiritual practice.
First, learn to recognize the original mind even when ordinary mental activity is in full chaos. Sit quietly, watch thoughts come and go, don't grab onto any of them.
Second, cultivate moral integrity. The Daoist classics are clear: real cultivation includes both inner wisdom and outer virtue.
Third, bring mindful awareness to everyday things. Walking, eating, talking with others — you can stay connected to your original mind instead of getting lost in automatic reactions.
The Living Tradition
The teaching of original mind is Dao still lives on at Longhu Mountain and among Daoists worldwide. It's one of the most refined expressions of Daoist mysticism.
For those curious about exploring further, the classical texts of Taoism have endless wisdom to offer.
Original mind is Dao tells us something simple but radical: enlightenment isn't some future achievement. It's the ever-present reality of our deepest nature.
The ancient masters said it plainly: the Dao is our original mind, and our original mind is the Dao.
