The Pan Jiuyang 潘九阳

Pan Jiuyang was a native of Beimen, Yunyang (now part of Hubei Province) in the early Qing Dynasty.

In the early years of the Kangxi reign (1662), he went to Wudang Mountain and became a Taoist Priest. Jiuyang was fond of chanting Taoist scriptures and repentance texts. He compiled prayers and texts for transcending the deceased and relieving suffering from the Daozang (Taoist Canon) into a collection titled Guangcheng Jiyao (Essential Compilations of Guangcheng).

As recorded in Volume 1 of Changchun Guanzhi (Records of Changchun Temple), Jiuyang aspired to travel to famous mountains across the country. He once encountered the Eight Immortals (a group of legendary Taoist immortals), who taught him the Great Five Thunder Method, instructed him on the key points of presenting memorials to the Heavenly Palace for prayer rituals, and left him a alms bowl of food. Jiuyang did not dare to eat the food; instead, he stirred it with one finger, which immediately turned into a golden finger. From then on, people called him "Pan the Golden Finger."

During a severe drought in Wuchang, Jiuyang’s prayers proved effective, and timely rainfall poured over the land.

Portraits of Pan Jiuyang (commemorating him as the founder) were enshrined in Yousheng Temple in Yubo Prefecture, Zhejiang Province, and Fuyou Palace in Huaicheng.
