The Peng Chunxian 彭椿仙

Paul Peng
Peng Chunxian (1883-1942), a native of Bijie County, Guizhou Province.

Formerly named Zhiguo. In his youth, he studied at the Yunnan Military Academy.

Deeply grieved by the corruption of the Qing government, he went to Qingcheng Mountain, became a Taoist Priest under the tutelage of Taoist Cheng Mingxing at Changdao Temple, and devoted himself to Taoist practice.

Diligent and earnest in learning, he was elected as the abbot by his fellow Taoists.

In the late Qing Dynasty, he actively learned sericulture techniques, promoted them in the rural areas around Qingcheng Mountain, and benefited the local people.

Later, the temple's property was seized by warlords. He went to Chengdu to file a lawsuit, which angered important military figures and led to his arrest and detention.

After that, he fled to other places, traveled around the Five Great Mountains, and later resided at Wudang Mountain.

In the 8th year of the Republic of China (1919), he returned to Qingcheng Mountain and engaged in the construction of the temple's dining hall. By the 28th year of the Republic of China (1939), all the halls of Changdao Temple were completed.

He built thatched pavilions along the mountain road for travelers to rest.

He founded a senior primary school, provided loans to relieve poor people, and was elected as the president of the Guan County Taoist Association.

He passed away in March 1942 at the age of 60.
