The Plague-Expelling Sacred Lamp Rites 正一瘟司辟毒神灯仪

Paul Peng

The Plague-Expelling Sacred Lamp Rites full name is

The Zhengyi Divine Lamp Rite for Warding Off Plagues and Toxins

The author is unknown. It was probably compiled during the Yuan Dynasty or the early Ming Dynasty.
Consisting of one scroll, it is included in What is The Daozang, under the category of Ritual Texts in The Dongzhen Section.

As one of the Taoist lamp rituals, this text is used for enshrining the Five Directional Plague Gods: Envoy Zhang of the East, Envoy Tian of the South, Envoy Zhao of the West, Envoy Shi of the North, and Envoy Zhong of the Center.

It states: "All mortals who suffer from plagues bring it upon themselves through evil deeds. If they can light lamps to enshrine the Five Directional Plague Envoys, recite praises and offer prayers, they will be able to subdue plagues, absorb toxins, and secure protection for their entire family—upholding the cosmic harmony of Yin and Yang."
