The Primordial Merit Food Sutra 元始说功德法食往生经

Yuanshi Tianzun Speaks the Scripture of Meritorious Dharma Feast for Rebirth in the Pure Land The author is unknown, and the text is believed to have been composed during the Tang and Song dynasties.

Consisting of one scroll, it is included in the Text Category of the Dongzhen Section of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).

Purportedly preached by Yuanshi Tianzun (the Primeval Lord of Heaven), this scripture aims to deliver the hungry ghosts in hell and the wandering souls of all sentient beings. It is stated that out of compassion for the hungry ghosts, beasts, and other beings in hell who suffered agony and could not be reborn into a better realm, Tianzun expounded two odes and one verse to the Perfected One of Great Mercy and Compassion. By offering the Dharma feast to hungry ghosts and reciting the scripture, all beings could be freed from suffering and be reborn in the realm of their aspiration.
