The Primordial Nectar Ascension Sutra full name is
Yuanshi Tianzun Speaks the Wonderful Scripture of the Divine Spell of Sweet Nectar for Ascension to Heaven
The author is unknown, and the text is believed to have been composed during the Song and Yuan dynasties.

Consisting of one scroll, it is included in theText Categoryof theDongzhen Sectionof theDaozang(Taoist Canon).

Purportedly preached by Yuanshi Tianzun (the Primeval Lord of Heaven) to the Boy of Serene Bright Moonlight, this scripture asserts that if all sentient beings "harbor the ten evil intentions and indulge in the five poisonous conducts", they will fall into hell after death, where they will "suffer the torments of extreme hunger and thirst, be seized by restlessness and suffocation, and even if they encounter clear ice, it will all turn into raging flames". There will be no way for them to attain liberation. Thus, Tianzun expounded theDivine Spell of Sweet Nectar for Communion with the True Dao. It is said that once the departed souls in hell hear this spell, they will naturally attain joy and partake of sweet nectar. He further revealed theDivine Spell of Purifying Fengdu, Breaking Through Hell and Ascending to Heaven, which enables the souls in hell to free themselves from the Three Calamities and Five Torments.
