The Shangqing Mingtang Xuandan Zhenjing 上清明堂玄丹真经

The Shangqing Mingtang Xuandan Zhenjing 上清明堂玄丹真经

Paul Peng

True Scripture of the Mysterious Elixir from the Bright Hall of the Supreme Pure Realm

It is an early classic of the Shangqing (Supreme Pure) School of Taoism, likely composed during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern Dynasties (317–589 CE).

Consisting of one scroll, it is included in the Zhengyi Bu (Orthodox Unity Section) of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).

The scripture expounds on the method of contemplating the nine palace divine lords in the human head. Its content and wording are largely identical to the chapter Taishang Daojun Shou Yuandan Shangjing (Upper Scripture of the Supreme Lord of the Dao Guarding the Primordial Elixir) contained in the Dongzhen Taishang Suling Dongyuan Dayou Miaojing (The Wondrous Scripture of Great Mystery from the Primordial Cavern of the Supreme Pure Spirit of the Great Cavern Realm). Thus, it should be a later work adapted by excerpting passages from the Dayou Miaojing (Wondrous Scripture of Great Mystery).
