The Sheng Kuang 盛旷

Sheng Kuang, also known by his courtesy name Yuanfang, was a native of Wulin (present-day western Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province) during the Song Dynasty.

He became a monk at the Sandong (Three Caves) in Jinhua in his early years and later moved to Chisong Mountain. He was skilled in the techniques of fuqi tunna (breathing exercises to absorb vital energy) and heyue waiqi (regulating external vital energy through exhalation and inhalation). During the Shaoxing reign period (1131-1162) of the Song Dynasty, he was summoned to the imperial court to teach the nüzi danfa (alchemical methods for women).
Emperor Gaozong of Song appointed him to oversee the Tanxuan Guan (Hall of Discussing Mysteries), commissioned him to collate Taoist classics, and bestowed upon him the title "Mr. Zhile" (Mr. Supreme Joy). He passed away at the age of over seventy.
