Sun Jingzhen was a native of Guixi County, Xinzhou Prefecture in the Yuan Dynasty (now part of Jiangxi Province).

After reaching the age of hair-pinning (a coming-of-age ceremony for ancient Chinese boys, usually around 15 years old), Sun Jingzhen began to study Taoism at Chongxi Courtyard of Shangqing Zhengyi Wanshou Palace, with Zhang Yangang as his teacher.
When Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty initially stabilized the country, Sun Jingzhen accompanied the 36th Celestial Master of the Hereditary Han Lineage to the imperial capital for an audience with the emperor. After their return, the Dulu (a high-ranking Taoist administrative position) had Zhenyuan Palace built and appointed Sun Jingzhen to preside over it.

In the 7th year of the Dade era (1303), by imperial decree, Sun Jingzhen was conferred the title of "Tongzhen Ningmiao Hongdao Dharma Master" and appointed as the Tiju Zhigongshi (a senior official in charge of the overall affairs of the Taoist temple) of Zhenyuan Palace.

In the 3rd year of the Zhiyuan era (1337), another imperial decree granted him the honorary title of "Jiaomen Gaoshang" (Senior Eminence of the Taoist Sect) and reappointed him to preside over Zhenyuan Palace. Sun Jingzhen was frugal in self-cultivation and generous in dealing with others.

He did not seek fame, yet his reputation spread naturally. He had Chongxi Taoist Temple and Yuyuan True Hall constructed.

In the 5th year of the Zhiyuan era, Sun Jingzhen passed away at Zhenyuan Palace at the age of 77.
