Excerpts from the Scripture of Great Peace

The original text of this work does not record its author.

It is included in the Great Peace Section of Daozang (the Taoist Canon).

According to textual research by modern scholar Wang Ming, this book was compiled by Lüqiufangyuan, a Taoist priest at the end of the Tang Dynasty, by excerpting and abridging The Scripture of Great Peace.

The original book consists of ten volumes, with each volume excerpting the main text of one section of The Scripture of Great Peace. Among them, the excerpts in Volume Jia are not the original text of the Eastern Han version of The Scripture of Great Peace, but are derived from Shangqing Sect Taoist texts of the Southern and Northern Dynasties such as Purple Script of the Numinous Book and Biography of the Later Sage Dao Lord of Shangqing.

In addition, according to Catalogue of the Scripture of Great Peace among the Dunhuang manuscripts, the contents of Volume Gui in the existing version of Excerpts from the Scripture of Great Peace actually belong to the excerpts of the original scripture’s Volume Jia, while the excerpts corresponding to the original Volume Gui are missing. This book summarizes the contents of the lost and incomplete volumes of The Scripture of Great Peace, preserving important materials for the study of the history of Taoist thought in the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Shen Fen of the Southern Tang Dynasty and Deng Mu of the Southern Song Dynasty praised this book for "containing all the essential gist" and "being concise in language yet profound in meaning", which is indeed an accurate description.
