The Ritual of Redeeming Departed Souls by the Ten Kings of the Underworld

It is believed to date from the Song or Yuan Dynasty. Consisting of one scroll, it is included in the Dongzhen Section (True Grotto Section) of the Daozang under the category of Rituals and Ceremonies.

This text records the ritual method for redeeming departed souls. The practitioner first burns incense to venerate the Three Pure Ones and Three Jewels Heavenly Lords of the Great Luo Heaven, then burns incense to venerate the Ten Kings of the Underworld, recites eulogies and declarations, and prays for the gods to bestow their great compassion and power to save and deliver the departed souls.

The so-called Ten Kings of the Underworld refer to the ten True Lords of the Underworld, whom the mortal world calls: King Taiguang, King Chujiang, King Songdi, King Wuguan, King Yama, King Biancheng, King Taishan, King Pingdeng, King Dushi, and King Zhuanlun.
