Wang Qingchu was a native of Ada, Yunnan, during the early Qing Dynasty, and people of his time called him Jin Huaihuai.

He lost his father at an early age and was raised by his elder sister. In the 15th year of the Shunzhi reign (1658), he went to Mount Jinge, where he studied under Taoist Precept-Master Tao Jing'an and worked as a woodcutter there for 17 years.

In the 13th year of the Kangxi reign (1674), he returned to Yunnan and resided at Mount Jizu.
Later, he traveled to Hubei, where he met Guan Tianxian. They got along well in their conversations and thus became senior and junior fellow disciples. He then lived at Zhenwu Palace on Mount Wudang for 29 years.

In the 42nd year of the Kangxi reign (1703), he went to Mount Jinge again, stayed there for three years, and then returned to Yunnan. There, he met the Taoist Priest of Mount Jizu, from whom he learned ritual combat techniques.

Shortly afterward, he went to Qingyang Palace in Chengdu. Li Niwan taught him arts such as huangbai (alchemy for transmuting base metals into gold or silver) and other related skills. From then on, he traveled extensively across the country.

Wang Qingchu was the founder of the Xinzong (Mind Sect) branch of the Longmen Sect (Quanzhen Taoism).
