Commentary on the Jade Chapters Scripture of Generating Spirits from the Nine Heavens, Naturally Revealed by the Mysterious Grotto Lingbao (Dongxuan Lingbao Ziran Jiutian Shengshen Yuzhang Jing Jie), annotated by Wang Xichao, a Taoist priest from Mianzhou during the Southern Song Dynasty.

Completed in the first year of the Kaixi reign of Emperor Ningzong of the Song Dynasty (1205 CE).

In three scrolls, it is included in the Daozang (Taoist Canon) under the Dongxuan Bu (Section of the Mysterious Grotto) and Yujue Lei (Category of Jade Commentaries).

The first and second scrolls annotate the first half of the Scripture of Generating Spirits (Shengshen Jing).

The third scroll annotates the latter half of the Scripture of Generating Spirits (i.e., the Nine Chapters on Generating Spirits [Shengshen Jiuzhang] and the Ode of the True Lord of the Supreme Ultimate [Taiji Zhenren Song]).

In the preface at the beginning of the text, the author declares: "The Nine Chapters on Generating Spirits comprises four core principles: first, cherish one’s physical form; second, safeguard one’s spirit; third, value one’s qi (vital energy); fourth, consolidate one’s root (essence)."

Form, spirit, qi, and root (essence) are interrelated, all being essential elements of life that cannot be separated for a moment.

Therefore, practitioners of Taoism should cherish their form, safeguard their spirit, value their qi, and consolidate their essence.

This is the fundamental meaning of the scripture that the author elaborates and clarifies in his annotations.
