Xie Yun, also known by his courtesy name Daotong and the sobriquet Xie Luoxian, was a native of Liyang (present-day Hexian County, Anhui) during the Western Jin Dynasty.

He served as the magistrate of Luo County. Records of Hezhou states that during the Taikang period (280–289), he abandoned his official post and became a Taoist on Mount Wudang, where he received and learned the Daoist method of refining the spirit to attain emptiness and tranquility.
