Xu Yankong was a native of Pei County (now part of Jiangsu Province) during the Ming Dynasty.
He styled himself "Hongyang" and also had an alternative literary name "Sanwuzi".
In his early years, he entered Lazhu Stream in Wudang Mountain to practice Daoism; later, he passed through Jiuxian Guan (Nine Immortals Temple) in Nanyue (the Southern Mountain), and thus became officially registered there as a resident.
