The Yang Laiwang 杨来旺

Yang Laiwang (?-1909) was a native of Baihe County, Shaanxi Province in the late Qing Dynasty.

He once passed the Xiaolian examination (a civil service examination for selecting virtuous and filial candidates in ancient China) but later grew indifferent to official career. In the first year of the Tongzhi reign (1862), he entered Wudang Mountain and became a Taoist monk by studying under He Yangchun of the Quanzhen Longmen School (Dragon Gate School of Complete Perfection).

He attained profound Taoist attainments, proficient in Thunder Magic and medical skills, and was recommended as a Taoist monk at Zixiao Palace.

In the sixth year of the Xianfeng reign (1856), Wudang Mountain was almost half burned down by the Red Turban Army during the war. Laiwang resolved to restore all the palaces on Wudang Mountain. Leading more than a dozen disciples, after over ten years of arduous almsgiving and fundraising, he built roads and bridges, bringing a brand-new look to Wudang Mountain.

To develop the strength of the Quanzhen Longmen School, he also accepted more than fifty disciples at Zixiao Palace, Nanyan Palace, and Jingle Palace, among whom his outstanding disciples included Xu Benshan, Zhou Xinchun, Wang Fumiao, Miao Fuqing, and Cheng Hexing.
