The Supreme Primordial Scripture of the Auspicious Invocation to the Mighty Divine King of the Golden Clouds in the Nine Heavens of Jade Capital
As an early classic text of the Shangqing School (Supreme Clarity School), it likely originated during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420–589 CE).
The Code of Precepts for Devotion to the Dao in the Two Grottoes records the title "The Supreme Clarity: The Jade Spell Scripture of the Mighty Divine King of the Golden Clouds in the Nine Heavens of Jade Capital"; Volume 3 of Classified Matters of the Shangqing Dao quotes from The Supreme Primordial Scripture—both references refer to this very text.
The present version in the Daozang (Taoist Canon) consists of one scroll and is included in the "Methods Category" (Fangfa Lei) of the Dongzhen Bu (True Grotto Section). The scripture contains two spell texts and three types of true talismans, namely:
- "The Great Auspicious Invocation Method of the Mighty Divine King,"
- "The Inner Auspicious Invocation Method of the Mighty Divine King,"
- "The Great Tiger Talisman of the Jade Radiance and Upper Primordial,"
- "The Uninhibited Seven Origin Talisman,"
- "The True Golden Tiger Talisman of the Heavenly Lord of the Supreme Mystery."
It is claimed that the spells implicitly contain the inner names of divine and demonic beings such as the Mighty Divine King of the Golden Clouds, the great ghosts of the Six Heavens, and the Demon Kings of the Northern Emperor.
By practicing cunsi (visualization meditation) on the Mighty Divine King and reciting his spells, "a thousand evil spirits will flee and ten thousand ghosts will hide their forms."
Wearing the three types of true talismans can also "subdue demons and execute ghosts," enabling practitioners to "command heaven and earth with divine power, shout orders to legions of spirits, control and ride the luminous dragons, and hold a position among the exalted immortals."
