Zhan Shouchun was a native of Jinling in the Jiangnan region (present-day Nanjing) during the early Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Fuyao, and his Taoist title was Yiyangzi.

His ancestral home was Huizhou. His family had been in the salt trade for generations, and thus they settled in Jinling.

To avoid the chaos of war, he went into seclusion in the Yanshan Mountains, sustaining himself on pine and cypress [needles or bark] to get by. Later, he met Wang Changyue, whom he took as his teacher and from whom he received the Chuzhen Precepts (Initial Perfection Precepts).

In the 12th year of the Shunzhi reign (1655), when Wang Changyue came to Wangwushan Mountain and stayed at Lingyou Palace as a visiting monk, Shouchun followed him and soon returned north to Yanjing (Beijing). There, they established a precept platform at Baiyun Guan (White Cloud Taoist Temple), attracting a multitude of followers. Shouchun further received the major precepts and led the Taoist community for several years.

In the 3rd year of the Kangxi reign (1664), when Wang Changyue traveled south and stayed successively in places such as Jinggai, Qionglong, Qingping, and Qixia, Shouchun accompanied him.

He had close interactions with eminent Taoist masters such as Lü Shoupu, Tao Jing’an, Huang Shouyuan, Tao Taiding, Zhou Tailang, and Shi Liangsheng, with whom he mutually expounded the profound teachings of the Supreme Lord (Taishang).

In the 39th year of the Kangxi reign (1700), he went on a wandering journey, and his whereabouts thereafter became unknown.

He was an 8th-generation Lvshi (Precept Master) of the Longmen (Dragon Gate) School of Taoism.
