The Zhang He 张鹤

Paul Peng
Zhang He was a native of Rui'an, Zhejiang Province during the Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Jingxiang.

He was officially registered as a Taoist priest at Yuqing Guan (Jade Clear Temple) in Shanghai.
He excelled in poetry and prose, was skilled in painting landscapes, and was particularly renowned in the Taoist community for his guqin (ancient zither) playing.

In the third year of the Tongzhi reign (1864), he compiled Qinxue Rumen (Introduction to Guqin Studies), which included gongche notation (a traditional Chinese musical notation), and the sheet music remains popular to this day.
