Zhang Huizhai was a native of Jingmen (now part of Hubei Province) at the end of the Yuan Dynasty.

In his youth, he was a tribute student. On one occasion, he accidentally obtained the Yin-Yang Divine Seal; he also dreamed that Zhuge Kongming (Zhuge Liang) taught him the method of using the Divine Seal to summon the Loyal and Filial Thunder Soldiers for eliminating evil spirits. Thus, he left his family and went to Mount Wudang to become a Taoist priest. Later, he passed this method on to Zhao Quanyang and Huang Guyang.

In the 11th year of the Zhizheng era (1351), due to the Red Turban Uprising, True Person Huang secluded himself in Xishan of Nanchang, and his Taoist doctrines and practices were subsequently spread to the Jiangxi region.
