The Zhang Zhixin 张志信

Zhang Zhixin was a native of Zhangzhou (ancient place name, exact location to be verified) during the late Jin to early Yuan Dynasty, and was styled "Xiaoyaozi" (the Unrestrained One).

During the Zhenyou era (1213–1217), he migrated south to avoid chaos and then retreated to live in seclusion in the remote mountains. Later, upon hearing that Wang Qiyun was delivering lectures on Taoist doctrines at Panshan Mountain, he traveled a thousand miles to attend the lectures and thus entered the Taoist school.

After several years of studying and mastering the doctrines, he bid farewell to his teacher and descended the mountain. He traveled around famous mountains and great rivers, living a simple life—dwelling in humble places like bird nests, feeding on wild grains in valleys, with unkempt hair and a dirty face. He regarded the heavens and the earth as his temporary inn, and his physical body as a transient lodging. He devoted himself to seeking the Dao wholeheartedly, and his aspiration never wavered from beginning to end.

In the fourth year of the Zhengda era (1227), Magistrate Zhao of Chan Yuan County (Chan Yuan，ancient place name, likely present-day Puyang, Henan Province) earnestly invited him to reside at Lingxian Zhenjun Temple (Temple of the Spiritual and Manifested True Lord).

From then on, the number of people who came to study Taoism under him grew day by day, with hundreds of disciples. Officials of Kaizhou Prefecture then granted him land and money to build Shenqing Guan (Shenqing Taoist Temple), and appointed Zhang Zhixin as the abbot of the temple.
