Zhou Qing'an was a native of Jinan, Shandong Province, in the early Yuan Dynasty. His Taoist title was "Tianranzi" (the Master of Peaceful Tranquility).
His family was wealthy and prominent, with officials serving in successive generations.
From a young age, he had a celestial demeanor and an innate affinity for Taoism. He was insightful about life and death, and had a strong admiration for the Taoist school.

One day, he met Patriarch Yuyang (a revered Taoist master), after which he abandoned his secular life and became a Taoist practitioner.
