Treatise on Inner Illumination

Compiled by Mao Rixin in the Southern Song Dynasty, this work is a single volume included in the Alchemy Section of The Dongzhen Section within The Daozang.

A preface written by the compiler in the fourth year of the Qiandao reign (1168) is included at the beginning, stating that Mao Rixin met Mr. Song, who transmitted his composed poems and ci to him, and thus Mao compiled this anthology. The book collects thirty poems and twenty-six ci poems, all eulogizing the way of Internal Alchemy.

It generally regards preserving the essence, qi and spirit, unblocking the Niwan acupoint, eliminating yin and perfecting yang, and refining qi to transform into spirit as the essentials of the elixir cultivation method. It also elaborates in detail on the spiritual phenomena and personal sensations experienced during the process of elixir refinement.
