Originally titled "Annotated by Wang Daoyuan, the Hermit of Hunran from Xiujiang, Nanchang".
Wang Jie, styled Daoyuan, was a Quanzhen Taoist priest at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty.
The original work consisted of three volumes, which were consolidated into one volume and included in the Yujue (Jade Secrets) category of The Dongzhen Section in The Daozang.
Yin Fu Jing Commentary Written by Wang Daoyuan
The scripture text in this book is based on the over-400-character version, divided into volumes but not chapters.
Each part of the annotations first explains the meaning of the scripture and then appends odes, hence the name "Annotated Commentary with Interspersed Odes".
The volume opens with the author’s preface and an Explanation of the Title, stating: "All things that have form are called Yin; all things that have life and nature are called Fu; all things that embody the inherent Dao are called Jing". It also says: "The two characters Yin and Fu refer to the body and mind, nature and emotion, water and fire, spirit and qi, lead and mercury, dragon and tiger, movement and stillness—they are the foundation of elixir cultivation and the source of Dao practice". His interpretation of the meaning of "Yinfu Jing" is rather forced. The annotations repeatedly expound on the theories and methods of practicing Internal Alchemy, frequently quoting the theories of Wei Boyang, Shi Jianwu, Zhang Boduan as well as elixir scriptures, with occasional references to Confucian and Buddhist ideas.
It can be described as a comprehensive work that interprets the Yinfu Jing through the perspective of elixir Dao.
