The Hu Xuanzong 胡玄宗

Hu Xuanzong (1397–?) was a native of Handan County, Shunde Prefecture, Zhili (now part of Hebei Province) in the early Ming Dynasty.

As recorded in Nanwu Daopai Zongpu (Genealogy of the Nanwu Taoist School), his courtesy name was Fanzhi and his literary name was Zhaoyuanzi.

In his youth, he was proficient in the study of geomancy and Confucian classics. In his middle age, he established a Confucian school and integrated the teachings of the Three Religions (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism). Later, he went to Qingcheng Mountain, where he met Yang Lixin. Yang taught him the supreme Taoist doctrines and essential formulas, and thus Hu Xuanzong became the 6th-generation patriarch of the Nanwu School of Taoism.
