Massage and Health Preservation

Massage, also known as "anqiao" (pressing and stepping), "fuxing" (supporting the body), "tuina" (pushing and grasping), "mosuo" (rubbing and stroking), etc., is a method where the masseur kneads and rubs the skin and muscles with hands to promote blood circulation, regulate nerve function and human mechanisms, thereby enhancing the body's natural disease resistance, promoting the recovery of the sick body, and improving resistance.

Taoism attaches great importance to massage for disease prevention and health preservation. It combines massage with daoyin (guidance), swallowing saliva, regulating qi, and cunsu (visualization), and forms the characteristics of Taoist medicine together with daoyin, massage, and acupuncture. Massage methods have existed since ancient times and have been passed down to the present. They have developed differently in different dynasties, but their basic content has not changed much. Here are some selected ones:

  1. Eye and Ear Massage
Close your eyes gently, press and wipe both eyes with your thumbs, then press and wipe past the ear doors. Cross your palms behind the neck, and repeat this many times. Persisting in this method can achieve the effect of clear ears and bright eyes.
  2. Nose Massage
Inhale slowly through the nose, hold your breath after filling the lungs, and at the same time massage the bridge of the nose and the inner corners of both eyes with both hands, doing this dozens of times up and down. Stop massaging, and exhale slowly through the mouth. This is one round, and it can be repeated many times. Practicing for a long time can calm the qi, cure various nasal diseases, and also have the effect of improving eyesight.
  3. Facial Massage
Rub your palms against each other forcefully, starting slowly and then speeding up until they become hot. After warming up, start to rub your face: start from the left side, rub across the forehead to the right side, then rub back to the left side along the lower jaw. This counts as one cycle. Rub for more than 10 cycles, once in the morning and once in the evening every day. If needed, you can wash your face with an appropriate decoction of medicinal herbs before massaging the face. This method can improve facial blood circulation, treat chronic facial diseases (such as facial nerve spasm, facial neuralgia), and with long-term use, it can treat facial pigmentation, freckles, etc., and prevent facial aging. However, it should be noted that the technique should gradually increase from light to heavy, without excessive force. Do not abuse drugs. Those with facial skin diseases and allergies are not suitable for this method.
  4. Abdominal Massage
Sit or lie down, breathe naturally, and stack your hands on the lower abdomen below the navel. For men, place the palm of the left hand against the abdomen, and stack the right hand on the left hand; for women, do the opposite. Then, with the navel as the center, use both hands to circle around the navel: move clockwise from a small circle to a large circle, and when reaching the largest circle (from the lower costal arch to the pubic bone), then move counterclockwise from a large circle to a small circle. For women, first move counterclockwise from a small circle to a large circle, then clockwise from a large circle to a small circle. This method can prevent and treat diseases such as poor spleen function, indigestion, and abdominal distension. When using this method, the technique should be uniform, slow, and gentle. It is not suitable to do it on an empty stomach (it can be done half an hour after meals). Long-term use has the effect of regulating chronic diseases.
  5. Foot Massage
According to the latest holographic theory combined with traditional Chinese health concepts, all organs of the human body can correspond to the feet. Therefore, massaging the feet can have an excellent effect. The foot massage method is to press the relevant parts of the feet with the thumb or finger joints, draw circles slowly with moderate force; rub the soles of the feet with the palms until the heat penetrates inside and out. This method can treat systemic diseases. In addition, you can also choose some parts for targeted massage. For example, the heart is on the left side of the human body, corresponding to the left foot.
  6. Whole-Body Massage
Rub both hands until they are hot, then start from Baihui acupoint, press and knead around the head, Fengchi acupoints, and both sides of the neck in sequence. Then alternately pinch the shoulders, upper arms, elbows, wrists, and fingers with both hands. Then pat the back (or ask others to massage the back), rub the waist and the kidney area, press and knead the chest, breasts, and abdomen, and finally beat the thighs, pinch the knees, calves, ankles, soles, and toes. Regular massage can dispel wind evil and turbid qi in the muscles and skin of the limbs, and can be used to treat systemic diseases such as dizziness, tinnitus, impaired hearing, chronic pharyngitis, wind-cold colds, rheumatoid and rheumatoid arthritis, frozen shoulder, low back pain, and lumbar muscle strain.
  7. Gao Mo (Ointment Massage)
Prepare an ointment according to a prescription (usually prescriptions for promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, warming the meridians to dispel cold, strengthening tendons and bones, etc.) or take a ready-made ointment. Apply a small amount of the ointment to the body surface acupoints or the affected area, then perform massage treatment. It should be noted that most ointments contain toxic substances and must not be taken orally. In addition, avoid massaging damaged skin areas.
