Meng Po, also known as "Goddess Meng Po", resides permanently by the Naihe Bridge. Her duty is to ensure that all ghosts going to be reincarnated forget everything about their past lives and the underworld.
According to legend, Meng Po was born during the Western Han Dynasty. In her childhood, she was well-versed in the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism, and in her youth, she began to recite classic works. Her cultivation reached a state where she neither dwelled on the past nor thought about the future. During her lifetime, she dedicated herself to persuading people to abstain from killing and eat a vegetarian diet. At the age of 81, she had white hair but a youthful complexion, and she always maintained her chastity, remaining a virgin. She only said that her surname was Meng, so people at that time called her "Granny Meng". Later, she entered the mountains to practice asceticism and lived on until the Eastern Han Dynasty.
In the world, some people, with their profound spiritual insight, can know the cause and effect of their previous lives. They like to play tricks and use numerology, such as revealing the secrets between yin and yang, which would cause people in the world to recognize their relatives and friends from previous lives again, thus disrupting the order of human relationships in the world. Therefore, the Jade Emperor specially appointed Granny Meng as a god of the netherworld, ordered the construction of the Yuwang Platform (the Platform of Forgetting), and allowed her to select ghost officials to serve her. She gives the ghosts, who are designated by the Tenth Hall of the Underworld to be reincarnated as humans, a decoction made from medicines collected from the mortal world, which is like wine but not wine, commonly known as "the Soup of Oblivion", to make them forget their past lives.
