Inner Alchemy of Heart-Mind

Originally attributed to Liu Zhiyuan, titled Tongxuanzi of Jinfeng Mountain, a disciple of Wang Jichang (Chaoranzi), who lived approximately during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. The original work consists of three scrolls and is included in the Methods Category of The Dongzhen Section within The Daozang.

This book expounds the methods of Internal Alchemy (Neidan), with the first scroll containing poems, the second ci-poems, and the third treatises. It quotes the words of Zhang Boduan, Bai Yuchan, Ma Danyang and Qiu Chuji, integrating the alchemical methods of both the Northern and Southern sects, yet its doctrines lean toward those of Ma Danyang of the Northern sect.

Inner Alchemy of Heart-Mind

It holds that recognizing the mind and perceiving the nature is the primary task of cultivation, stating: "Those who fail to recognize this mind and perceive this nature are said to practice blindly and refine the elixir aimlessly". The essential of cultivation lies solely in abiding by the right mindfulness and the true reality, maintaining an unattached heart toward external circumstances, untying fetters and relieving burdens, curbing anger and restraining desires. One should harmonize the mind and breath, forget the physical form to nurture Qi, forget Qi to nurture the spirit, and forget the spirit to nurture emptiness.

"See through the emptiness of all dharmas and the unreality of all phenomena; every delusional attachment shall vanish in its very form, and all karmic leaks shall be exhausted of their own accord." Its doctrines draw on the teachings of Chan Buddhism.
