The Ling (铃) Dharma Bell
Paul PengShare
Ling, also known as "Sanqing Ling" (Three Pure Ones Bell), "Yao Ling" (Shaking Bell), "Di Zhong" (Imperial Bell), "Fa Zhong" (Dharma Bell), "Fa Ling" (Dharma Bell), etc. It is generally made of copper, with a handle and a clapper inside, making a sound when shaken. The upper end of the handle is in the shape of the Chinese character "山" (mountain), symbolizing the Three Pure Ones, the deities worshipped in Taoism.
Taoism holds that the Dharma bell has the functions of summoning deities and exorcising demons. When used on the Taoist altar, the bell must be held in one hand and shaken rhythmically to one side. Shangqing Lingbao Dafa (The Great Method of the Supreme Numinous Treasure) states: "When the Dharma bell is shaken, both gods and ghosts pay homage."
