The Xuanpin Lu 玄品录 Records of Mysterious Attributes
Paul PengShare
Xuanpin Lu (Records of Mysterious Attributes) is a Taoist biographical work compiled by Zhang Tianyu, a scholar of the Yuan Dynasty, consisting of five volumes. The author, a Taoist priest of Maoshan in the Yuan Dynasty, once compiled Mao Shan Zhi (Records of Maoshan) and was known by the literary name "Gouqu Waishi" (Outer Historian of Gouqu).

There is a preface written by the author himself at the beginning of the book. The entire work is divided into ten "pin" (categories), namely: Daode (Virtue of the Dao), Daoquan (Authority of the Dao), Daohua (Transformation of the Dao), Daoru (Dao and Confucianism), Daoshu (Arts of the Dao), Daoyin (Seclusion of the Dao), Daomo (Silence of the Dao), Daoyan (Words of the Dao), Daozhi (Essence of the Dao), and Daohua (Splendor of the Dao).

Covering the period from the Zhou Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, it records the life stories of over 130 Taoist figures from successive dynasties. Each category includes several figures, with a separate biography for each person, briefly recounting their life experiences. Although the book is somewhat extensive and complex, it still has reference value for the study of Taoist figures and Daoist thought. Xuanpin Lu is included in the "Dong Shen Bu Pu Lu Lei" (Class of Genealogies and Records in the Cave of Spirits Section) of the Zhengtong Daozang (Orthodox Taoist Canon).
