What do Taoist priests' shoes and socks look like? 鞋袜
Paul PengShare
Taoists usually wear double-faced shoes or ten-direction shoes, which are made of blue cloth. The edges of the shoes are cut with holes, and then the holes are either sewn with white cloth or left unsewn. These shoes are mostly worn in summer. They wear high-tube white socks to cover the trouser legs and tie them up to avoid body dirt falling to the ground when entering the hall.
The shoes worn by high priests during large-scale fasting and sacrificial rituals are black high-tube ones with thick, hard soles painted white. Among them, cloud shoes are worn by high priests in large-scale fasting and sacrificial ceremonies. They are made of colored brocade with shallow uppers, embroidered with cloud patterns, and have round toes and thick white soles. They are mostly used when high priests perform the "treading the gang and stepping the dipper" ritual.
