The Palm Fan is used for cooling, dusting, and repelling mosquitoes, while Taoist texts endow it with the special religious function of "sweeping away worldly affairs".
The bustling mortal world and countless troubles can be swept away with a wave of the brown fan: "The treasure fan is originally made of a piece of palm fiber; with a sway of its edge, all karmic connections vanish. Let there be evil spirits and demons—by virtue of this fan, they shall be overturned and destroyed, never to reappear."
